Adventurous Recreational Activities

A recreational activity need not necessarily mean sitting in a cottage sipping on some beer or coffee and not to forget a book in hand. This can indeed be exhilarating for some; however, for the truly adventurous, there has to be some 'outdoorsy' activity to heighten the adventure quotient. One can opt for adventure recreation in wilderness or outdoors. Other than being refreshing, the adventure activities teach outdoor survival, as in most cases the living conditions can be harsh. Depending on one's health, liking and age, one can choose between the different land, air and water adventure activities. The amount of time, you are ready to spend on the activity will also help in deciding the right activity for you. Alternately, you can decide to go on an adventure filled vacation. There are a number of places, which offer a range of adventure activities.

The adventure activities can also be a part of extreme sports and are often known as adventure sports. Speed, height, danger, physical exertion are some of the adjectives, which flash as soon as one talks about these activities. One of the characteristic of adventure activities is that the athlete often has to compete against nature and not as much against other participants. The forces of nature against whom the athlete finds himself competing include wind, water, mountains and snow. Since these factors cannot be controlled, it is not always possible to complete the sport activity, that one has planned for.

In this write-up find information about different adventure filled recreational activities. The activities are divided into three types, namely land adventure activities, water adventure activities and air adventure activities.

From the Ashes, since the Ashes

With a thumping 4-0 victory over India in the Test series that concluded in August 2011, England became the new No.1 Test team. And that too by displacing the existing No.1 team India. So now England are at the top of the longest and shortest version of the game (let's not forget that they are the defending champions of T-20 World Cup).

All this has not been sudden. It has been after a lot of ups and downs. More downs actually rather than ups. Not long ago, England was not performing well and was a highly inconsistent side. Also there was a period in 2007-2008 when captaincy was a major problem. Michael Vaughan, Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen - all led England at some point of time. This resulted in England becoming a highly unstable side. From such a situation to becoming the number one Test team in the world would not have been possible without a turnaround.

The turnaround started in 2009. In January 2009 Andrew Strauss was appointed as the captain after Kevin Pietersen resigned from the captaincy. Although his appointment was received positively Strauss's captaincy career did not start on a positive note. He started his captaincy career by losing the test series against West Indies in West Indies. It looked like the change in captaincy did not change the fortunes of the English team. But somehow Andrew Strauss did manage to bring the team together and focus on a goal - the goal of winning the Ashes (of 2009). This focus made a player like Stuart Broad refuse a lucrative IPL contract. Although a few English players did appear in the 2009 IPL, it did not affect their preparation for the Ashes. It was evident in the discipline their players showed, especially the bowlers. English bowling has really lifted their team.

The victory of 2009 Ashes Series helped the English team scale a new height in world of cricket. Until that series England's performance was highly inconsistent in any form of the game. After the 2009 Ashes Series this team started to push for the top position in Test cricket.

What makes England's success in Test cricket special is that they hardly had any grand success in the recent past to take inspiration from. Barring the Ashes win of 2005 there was nothing they could boast of before or after that. And the joy of the 2005 triumph was nullified in the 2006-07 Ashes series Down Under. Highly stung by the defeat in 2005, Australia promptly put England in their place with a 5-0 whitewash in the 2006-07 Ashes series. Thus the magic and joy of the Ashes win for England was short-lived.

But that history did not repeat itself in 2010-11 Ashes Series. After winning the Ashes at home in 2009 England did not let the Ashes slip when they toured down under. Continuing their great run in Test cricket England humiliated Australia with a 3-1 win. With this win the English team really started staking their claim for the top position in Test cricket. It was nothing short of a miracle for a team, which was nowhere among the top teams a year and a half ago, to be on the verge of becoming the number one team. However England's success makes for an interesting analysis vis-à-vis India.

If we take a look at India, which was number one Test team for a period of almost two years, things were different. India's performance in the past decade was certainly more consistent than that of England's. It wasn't as if India won each and every series. But India started winning abroad more consistently than before. The process of becoming number one team had started much before. And because of that India had a good record in the recent past to take inspiration from. In a sense they had the support of their own history. This process started by Saurav Ganguly completed a full circle when the Indian team under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the number one team in the world.

England had no such luxury. Only miracle could have taken them to this position. And that miracle did happen in the form of captain Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower. Both of them deserve full credit for England's success. But there is one important factor that has changed the fortunes of this team. Former England captain Michael Atherton in his autobiography 'Opening Up' has written about the difference between the English and the Australian team. He cites 'pride' as the critical factor in Australia's success. He says that he always felt English players were low on pride when it came to playing for their country. He said one of the main reasons of England's failure was lack of pride and motivation while playing at the international level.

The current English team is certainly showing a different attitude. There is no lack of pride. There is no lack of spirit and there is a plenty of positive attitude. This is evident from the fact that they are playing aggressively especially while bowling. Strong bowling department has played the most crucial role in their rise to the number one position. Again this is something contrary to the Indian team. Batting and that too aggressive batting (since Virender Sehwag opens the innings!) was responsible to a great extent for India's success. Indian batting prowess has been successful in not just winning matches but also covering up a relatively weak bowling.

In England's case their batting has not been aggressive. But it has certainly been solid and gritty. Their batsmen are not bogged down easily. Also if we take a look at their batting record we can see that all of their batsmen are coming to the party. Their batsmen are playing with such a consistency which was absent for many years.

If we talk about their bowling, it has really grown from strength to strength. Their bowlers are aggressive, accurate and focused. Their fast bowlers have a great variety in terms of pace, bounce, swing and reverse swing. Add to that the rise of Graeme Swann, the off-spinner and their attack looks complete. For a country not known for its spinners, it is a matter of great pride that it has the number one spinner in the world at the moment.

Add to that their sharp fielding makes them a formidable side. With a well-balanced, consistent and strong side with an inspiring leadership, England are sure to remain at the top of the table for a while. Other teams surely need to put in lots of efforts to snatch the crown from England.

Pujols - It is My Turn Albert

For fans of the St. Louis Cardinals, their rapid descent down a mountain began a mere three days following their peak, which was an unlikely World Championship following an epic journey from twenty-five games out with the announcement that their manager of seventeen years, Tony LaRussa would be hanging it up. After the emotional departure, the Cardinals were swept into a whirlwind of rumor and conjecture over who would take the helm. Managers as illustrious as former Red Sox manager Terry Francona, to Chicago Cubs icon Ryan Sandberg were in the mix. In the end however, the St. Louis front office did something that baffled the entire baseball world by electing to go with a first time manager in Mike Matheny.

If that wasn't enough drama for an off-season, the Cardinals were just ramping up what would sure to be a busy few months. As the 2011 Winter Meetings loomed, Matheny was busy trying to figure out who would be his first baseman on opening day. The first time he would attend Winter Meetings as a manager, would undoubtedly be one of the biggest in recent history.

The front office failed to reach an agreement on a contract extension for Albert Pujols, causing him to cut off all negotiations with the reasoning that he didn't want contract talks to distract him or the team from their job, to win. For many Cardinal fans, this was the moment that the city of St. Louis lost it's most revered player, for as soon as he hit the open market, the Cardinals would be outdone by the big guns in the East. But come the winter meetings, it wasn't the expected New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, or Philadelphia Phillies that made a run for the face of the franchise. Instead, unexpected big spenders the Miami Marlins and the sleeper Los Angeles Angels swept in and courted, with the latter being the big winners, offering him a 10 year 254 million dollar payday. The second largest contract in history to Alex Rodriguez's 10 year 275 million dollar deal.

Many people, myself included, expected a huge back lash from the city of St. Louis, remnant of the city of Cleveland when their beloved LeBron James left for the payday in Miami. But I was surprised to hear reactions from fans that bordered on resolve, and in some cases, relief.

The question wasn't whether or not Albert Pujols was worth the big money that he was asking, but more whether or not the team was willing and able to make the deal. I heard many fans say things like, "I am sad to see him go, but glad we didn't pay him that much." It reminded me of why the fans in St. Louis are considered the best in baseball, they are smart, baseball people. They realized that while keeping the icon here in St. Louis was desired, it also would come at a price, and a price that they, nor the front office was willing to pay.

The general consensus is, the deal makes sense.

Would Albert Pujols be worth $254 million over ten years? The short answer. In the right place. In St. Louis he would be worth it for the first four, or at best six years of his contract. Then, due to the fact that he would hit his mid-thirties, he would begin to decline and the team would overpay someone who wasn't producing. So what made sense for everyone was for him to go get the big payday for an American League team. It is easy to see the advantage for the Angels. They get the sexy sign that tells their fans that they are the team to cheer for in Southern California. The advantage for Albert Pujols is even easier to see. He gets to play in good weather, on a contending team, and let's not forget that 254 million dollars will buy a relatively livable existence in sunny So-Cal. But, the advantage for the city of St. Louis is harder to see. Once you let the grief and emotion melt away, when the mourning period ends, what is left is something of a shock in St. Louis.

Hope.

With the departure of Pujols, there is a void that needs to be filled in the line-up, but also a void in the payroll that John Mozeliak is waiting to use. The team has a few holes that need to be addressed, as pinpointed on MLB Network, outfield depth, middle infield, and a left-handed reliever. With what is left on the free agent market, the Cardinals could replace his numbers, fill in all the holes with newer and younger players, and best of all, come in way under the price that Albert Pujols demanded.

For instance... (keep in mind this is purely hypothetical. I simply used last year's salary for players still on the market that could be a good fit in St. Louis. There are no deals to my knowledge in the works, with the exception of Rafael Furcal.)

Josh Willingham - $6 Million
Casey Blake - $6 Million
Rafael Furcal - $7 Million
Nick Punto - $750,000
J.C. Romero - $1.3 Million.

Josh Willingham gives the Cardinals outfield depth, allowing for John Jay and Allen Craig to continue performing in their platoon role, where both have found comfort. He also will take a small step in replacing some of the power lost when Pujols left.

Casey Blake is a good bat off the bench who can play the two corner infield spots plus corner outfield positions. With the proposed starters being the injury prone David Freese and Lance Berkman, a good backup is needed for both.

Rafael Furcal has been signed for two seasons at $14 Million and already is set in St. Louis. He is a solid shortstop and true leadoff hitter, something St. Louis hasn't had in quite a long time.

Nick Punto seems to be able to play every position except the front office and at less than a million a year he is a bargain. When you can play good defense at six positions anything you do offensively is a bonus.

J.C. Romero isn't an outstanding left-handed reliever but he is consistent and when you can get a consistent pitcher in front of Dave Duncan he has the ability to make them great.

Total annual cost = $21,050,00.00

Sure, it is easy to find replacements for him financially, but will these players fill the statistical gap? Can they make up the numbers? I looked at the 162 game average for each player and combined them, compared them to The Machine, and this is what I came up with.

Player AVG HR RBI
Josh Willingham .262 27 88
Casey Blake .264 21 79
Rafael Furcal .282 12 59
Nick Punto .249 3 40
Cumulative .264 63 266
Albert Pujols .328 42 126

With the exception of the batting average, the multiple guys that St. Louis can get with the money saved by his departure is more than enough to make up for his absence. Obviously this model has a few flaws but it is a hypothetical scenario that is meant to do nothing but show why Cardinal Nation has more to be excited about than to be mournful about. "The Gateway to the West," the city of St. Louis was exactly that for Albert Pujols, a Gateway to sunny So-Cal and the big payday, but for them... at least they saved some money on the bronze for his proposed statue next to Stan the Man.

Specific Strength and Power Training for Volleyball

Volleyball is a unique sport consisting of quick, powerful movements and lightning fast reflexes. The sport involves incredible timing by each athlete for individual skills and for team related play making synchronicity. Strength training and power training for a sport of this nature introduces a fair number of variables directed at the requirements that must be met for the different playing positions on the court. Certainly, one cannot expect a middle blocker who is primarily used for the offensive attack and net defense (blocking) to be trained in the same fashion as the libero, a player who is primarily on the court for back court defense. Different training parameters must be considered and then analyzed to develop a strength training and power training program that can be successfully applied to each volleyball playing position. Yet, there are athletes that are skilled enough to play in both the front court and back court and they must be thought of as all around players which requires them to be trained as offensive attackers and defensive blockers in addition to being trained as passers and defensive specialists.

During the off-season, strength training is the primary focus. Training for muscle hypertrophy is not usually a primary concern for volleyball players. Although, there are some players with excellent skills that are extremely thin and muscle hypertrophy needs to be the main focus before strength training can seriously be administered. Additional muscle mass is necessary for such players to handle the rigors of high level volleyball. It is essential that all players with a desire to play higher level high school, club, and especially collegiate volleyball develop strength levels that will make them superior athletes and protect them from stress injuries.

As with all power sports, a strong strength base must exist before an improvement in power can be expected. It is true that volleyball athletes must have powerful arms to be successful as attackers and servers, but it is core, hip, and leg strength which requires the greatest amount of attention. Specificity in a lower body strength program for player positions is not that necessary seeing that all players need strong core, hips, and legs to either jump well, move in a lateral direction efficiently, squat low, or quickly dive outward. An effective program must be supplied with the following key strength building exercises:

How to Choose the Right Hydration Pack

From an athlete's point of view, what could be worse than having to carry an extra load of bottled water every time you venture outdoors? A hydration pack is the accessory, which puts an end to this particular misery. You could be a cyclist, a trekker, a snowboarder, a camper or even a recreational walker; a hydration pack is a must-have, as it tends to your body's basic requirement - water.

Choosing the Correct Hydration Pack

The importance of keeping your body hydrated has been well documented. When you are on the move, it does feel a little cumbersome to reach out to a bottle for that much-needed sip of water. Fret not, for a hydration pack gives you a steady supply of water, and we're here to help you choose one that suits you best.

Ready, Steady, Choose!
Yes, it is actually as easy as that. A point to remember and rejoice about is that a good hydration pack also doubles up as a backpack. Although its basic purpose is to store water, you will find variants that allow you to throw in a few handy supplies too. All you need to do is keep the following factors in mind.

It's All in the Game
And isn't that fairly obvious? The sport you indulge plays a major role in deciding the kind of hydration pack you ought to be using. For instance, a recreational hiker would find a hydration pack with just a reservoir sufficient; a mountain biker, however, would need more space in the pack to include, say, another tire tube or even some food. Although hydration requirements are variable, the sport you will be playing is an important factor when it comes to buying a hydration pack.

Activity Cycling Trekking Running Skating Walking
Pack Size Big Medium Small Medium Small

Think: Tank
Selecting the reservoir volume is crucial, as you wouldn't want to be lugging a heavy load on your back unnecessarily. On the other hand, being dehydrated despite carrying a hydration pack is a tragedy too. You need to consider the activity you will be involved in, and keep the weather conditions in mind as well. Reservoirs can be insulated in order to control the water's temperature, this is a useful feature for skiers.

Reservoir Capacity 1-1.5 liters
(35-50 fl. oz.)
2 liters
(70 fl. oz.)
3 liters
(100 fl. oz.)
Weight 1-1.5 lbs 2 lbs 2-2.5 lbs

Measure it Up
Your cargo requirements will dictate the size of your hydration pack. As a serious hiker, you may need a pack that has a lot of space, especially if you plan overnight trips. If you happen to be a trail runner, a small waist pack should suffice. In case you plan a long trip, you could consider buying the hiking pack which comes with 2500 cubic inches of cargo space. Similarly, for people who are into winter sports, a bigger pack equals more space for warm clothes.

Sip or Bite
Hydration packs come with a tube which has either a mouthpiece that you would need to bite to release the water, or sip directly from it. Why is this important? Well, the tube needs to be flexible enough to reach out to when you are thirsty, more so if you happen to be cycling or snowboarding. Tubes made of polyurethane are known to pass a plastic odor to the water, so ensure that you wash it and dry it after every use. Alternatively, silicone tubes are a popular option as well.

Sundries
Along with the above factors, you must consider the pack weight and essentially try it on to ensure that the pack fits you snugly, and that the tube is easily accessible. You can find clips that are designed to keep the tube in the correct position. Make sure that you prioritize comfort above everything else. There are specially designed packs for women and children available in stores. Also look out for packs that come with padded shoulder straps and adjustable hip straps. Some packs come with a detachable reservoir, which makes it easy to clean, do inquire about this feature.

Hydration packs were originally designed for professional cyclists, but considering its utility, it is not surprising that they've become a rage among sports enthusiasts the world over. It feels a little sad to bid farewell to the good, old water bottle, and with it, to all the fun squirting wars. But hey, utility wins every time, so good luck with finding the right hydration pack.
